DESCRIPTION:En septembre 2026\, Paris accueille un événement scientifique international dédié à l’odorat : la Conférence ECRO 2026 (European Society for Smell and Taste Research). Maryse Delaunay (MC\, LPCN\, Université de Caen Normandie) participera à cet évènement. \n\n\n\n\n\nEuropean Chemoreception Research Organization (ECRO)\n\n\n\nLe congrès annuel de l’ECRO est un des rendez-vous académiques incontournables de la recherche internationale dédiée aux sens chimiques. Pour son édition 2026\, l’événement se déroulera à Paris du 15 au 18 septembre sous la thématique centrale de l’innovation chimiosensorielle. Cette conférence de haut niveau rassemble des chercheurs\, des cliniciens et des industriels venus partager leurs recherches sur les mécanismes de l’olfaction et de la gustation. L’édition 2026 mettra en lumière les avancées biomédicales majeures\, les nouvelles technologies de diagnostic des troubles sensoriels\, ainsi que le développement de protocoles innovants de rééducation olfactive. \n\n\n\n\nProgramme et Informations\n\n\n\n\nUne chercheuse du LPCN présente lors de cet évènement\n\n\n\n\nMaryse Delaunay est maîtresse de conférences au LPCN. Ses recherches portent sur le développement de la cognition olfactive\, son objectif est de comparer les trajectoires de développement de jeunes enfants évoluant au sein de contextes socio-éducatifs différents. Elle est impliquée dans le programme de recherche SCOPE.Elle présentera un poster scientifique lors de la session poster 1\, le 16 septembre 2026 à 12h30. Sa communication est intitulée : \n\n\n\n\nUsing SCED to test the effects of olfactory awakening in young children\nSpeaker : Maryse Delaunay\, Université de Caen Normandie\, LPCN UR7452 \n\n\n\nAuthors : Elise Gendronneau\, Odran Guilbert\, Ana Reutimann\, Marie Anquetil \n\n\n\nAbstract : In Western societies olfaction is neglected\, despite its role in overall development\, and particularly in eating\, breathing and avoiding poisoning. To date\, we lack research examining the impact of olfactory awakening on young children. An intervention carried out while sharing focus attention and the intention to smell together with young children\, should help them develop olfactory skills\, such as smelling an odorant object rather than mouthing it directly. This is the aim of the present study\, that take advantages of Single Case Experimental Designs (SCED). Nine children (4 boys)\, randomly selected (from 3 different nursery groups in Normandy\, France)\, and aged between 8 and 25 months were followed-up after obtaining ethical and parental agreements. They were videotaped weekly over the course of 3 phases. Phase A\, the baseline period\, during which unfamiliar objects scented with natural products (floral waters\, or spices)\, were presented to the child without any olfactory awakening\, during either 7\, 9\, or 11 weeks. Phase B\, the olfactory awakening intervention\, during which an olfactory awakening was realized with natural scented objects (food)\, during 5 weeks. Then\, a test session\, similar from phase A\, tested the spontaneous use of the skill. Two independent observers used The Observer® XT17 (Noldus) to assess the duration of smelling or mouthing. The observations were reliable (k> 0.8). Visual analyses represent the curves of the behavioral responses recorded in phases A and B and during the test. Statistical analyses focus on non-overlap indices (Tau U) and size effects and proved to be significant for smelling in six children (p ≤0.05)\, but not for mouthing. An infant missed too many sessions in Phase B\, and another acquired the skill\, but used it mainly in the final test. This study shows that olfactory awakening learns young children to distinguish smelling with from mouthing. It could enable them to avoid poisoning\, or even to eat healthily.
